Sandera mairi ia s spiritual event started almost 200 years ago in Furukawa. On the eve of Jan 15th, the anniversary of Saint Shiran's death, people listen to lectures and worship at three temples: Enko-ji, Shinsyu-ji and Honko-ji. To ask for Saint Shiran's blessings, candles are lit throughout the night at each temple.
In the city and shopping districts, people light handmade candles that are placed in the snow making a fantastic display.
